Thermopolis, home to the biggest hot spring in the world! This is no big banana people! Picture this, after a tough 100km Kerstin and I can soak in the hot spring pool, sooth our sore spots, then sit by the pool, soak in the atmosphere, and sip a refreshing drink, sounds idillic huh? Then let me add a few more details, just to complete the picture... we slept through our alarm, and so were still riding when the mercury reached 38 degrees, the water in the hot spring fed pool is 110F this is about 45C, the view in the far distance is spectacular, but the near distance gives an excellent view of the train line on one side and the hwy on the other. Luckily the owners have jazzed up the place with a big fake volcano from which the charmingly rotten egg flavored hot spring erupts. The water in our drink bottles is luke warm at best and I could drown the woman in her fancy RV with a fridge for her big bottle of chilled ice tea. To this bizarre and uncomfortable situation our host adds the final touch when he next whizzes by on his golf cart, a jerry rigged sound system to the poolside crackles to life with the sounds of poor quality, sentimental, western music, and Kerstin and I are now laughing so hard we are crying:).
Before the odd experience that has been Thermopolis, the riding today was excellent, even with the heat. Leaving Wyoming's big name national parks behind we worried that the best of Wyoming was already behind us, we couldn't have been more wrong. It's just that the Wyomingnites are keeping the rest of the state to themselves! We rode the Wind River Canyon today, and it was just mind boggling, so unusual and striking.

I'm afraid I cannot write anymore as the campground host has pulled out the microphone and the sentimental western tunes continue LIVE! It is impossible to type, silently giggle and be inwardly horrified all at the same time!

What a striking experience!
ReplyDeleteJust got your post card from Yellowstone! Thanks!
I was out of pocket myself for the last several days. It has been a grand summer up north. I put a canopy topper on the back of my pickup truck. Then I built a bed into it. Now I have my own make shift camper. So Bernadette & I tested it out this past weekend up at Hatcher Pass. We set up a tarp system to protect us from the rain and wind, as well as to provide us with a cooking space and an area to dry out wet gear.
The hiking in this old mining area is incredible!
Last week we managed a day of 10 hours worth of hiking. We hit 5 peaks via ridges above the little sleeper town of Eagle River. This too is incredible hiking.
This weekend is the Resurrection 50/100 mile mountain race. Bernadette & I are planning on doing some support of the race and perhaps pacing some folks for the end of their run. I would also like to take her up on some of the ridge lines above Hope....
This great world is so very full of astounding gifts of nature!
Ride On!
Paps! Well done on posting a comment on the blog! We are looking forward to seeing more of those.
