The bike is good project began life in 2011 as a transcontinental bicycle adventure. As we pedalled from Seattle to Boston it grew into something even bigger. Life from the bike became life as we knew it, a way of engaging with the world that was much richer and honest than we had previously known. On our return to Australia we have tried to continue in the b.i.g. spirit, still happiest pedalling!

b.i.g. news

We have installed this page to briefly inform you about the latest news on the bikeisgood tour. Here you will find information if we change plans, divert from our b.i.g. route, call it 'quits', face breakdowns or reach other milestones.

22nd Septmber 2011 - Ticonderoga, New York: Our seven day journey through the Empire State has brought back the almost forgotten 'pleasures' of climbing hills/mountains on a bicycle. The Adirondacks have warmed us up for the oncoming Green Mountains in Vermont. The first signs and colours of fall are starting to show. The damages caused by storm 'Irene' will have us diverting from the original route. But the detour will bring along - besides an additional 60 miles - a factory tour at the Ben & Jerry's ice-cream shrine. Cool stuff.

15th September 2011 - Lockport, New York: We are back in the USA! After our beautiful side step into Ontario, Canada, and our lovely encounters with many friendly Canadians we are back in the US for the what our dear Aunty Fran calls 'the home stretch'. But we don't expect it to be one smooth roll'n & ridin' into Rockport, MA. Some of our designated route has been badly affected by storm 'Irene'. So there might be some detouring and some route alterations involved. Luckily we can count on the great expert support and advise from our dear friend Jenn at Adventure Cycling Association. A rough calculation would suggest that we could reach the finish line in approx. 18-20 days from now - providing all cycling gods are with us.

30th August 2011 - Wausau, Wisconsin: The b.i.g. tour is still well 'en route' heading east. We will take a small side step into the city of Wausau, where we have been offered local hopitality by Katie's friend Celine and family. Tomorrow we will approach the final four days in Wisconsin, hopefully catching the ferry in Manitowoc to cross Lake Michigan on Saturday or Sunday.

15th August 2011 - Hutchinson, Minnesota: We are on the doorstep of another milestone. Tomorrow we hope to reach the Twin Cities (Minneapolis & St. Paul) by crossing the 3.000 mile marker. We can't wait to spend some quality time in the city that our dear friend Jackie once called home and feel very lucky to be hosted by friends of friends. It's been a long stretch since last putting our feet up and enjoy a 'ride-free' day. We plan to discover and enjoy the city life of Minneapolis until Sunday, 21st August.

4th August 2011 - Rapid City, South Dakota: With the shrine of democracy (Mount Rushmore) behind us we are in good shape (mentally and physically) to head for the Badlands National Park. For the advanced b.i.g. route followers this equals to 5 days ahead of schedule.

24th July 2011 - Lander, Wyoming: A big leap forward! For all those who follow our journey more closely (and have our route planner on hand) we have moved forward quite a bit and made up some time. Not intentionally, it just turned out that way. After two long days in the saddle we anticipate to reach Riverton, Wyoming, by this afternoon. Which is about 3 days ahead of schedule. Also and sadly, we are leaving the Adventure Cycling Route (TransAm) behind and rely om our own bicycle navigation skills, until we reach Minneapolis.

14th July 2011 - West Yellowstone: Bye bye Montana, hello Wyoming! For the next 5-6 days we are exploring Yellowstone National Park, with all its wonders and in its beauty. We hear that access to communication technology is very limited. We will be back with 'bikeisgood' news as soon as we can. Until then, we keep the wheels rollin'.

7th July 2011, Wisdom, MT: Given the recent concerning news headlines coming from within and around Yellowstone National Park we will try to keep a close eye on the developments there. At this point we continue our journey to the NP as planned which should see us passing through the West Entrance on July 15.

1st July 2011 - arrived in Missoula, Montana, 3 days ahead of schedule. We will be spending the long Independence Day (4th July) weekend here before we head southbound towards Yellowstone NP on Tuesday, 5th July. Almost exactly a 1,000 miles and 100 hours of riding took us to this great city where we give our bodies and our bikes a good rest before things are getting serious (passes after passes and crossing the Continental Divide) on the way to Yellowstone and our next state Wyoming.
