The bike is good project began life in 2011 as a transcontinental bicycle adventure. As we pedalled from Seattle to Boston it grew into something even bigger. Life from the bike became life as we knew it, a way of engaging with the world that was much richer and honest than we had previously known. On our return to Australia we have tried to continue in the b.i.g. spirit, still happiest pedalling!

Day 16 Libby to Eureka 112km

Note: written in retrospect, way to buggered last night to do anything except lie on the bed, eat a subway foot long and watch repeats of NCIS. A chilly morning in Libby, but a homestyle breakfast at 'antlers restaurant' is planned to kick start us today, they open at 0800 and we are there with bells on. A big plate of French toast, scrambled eggs and as much maple syrup and whipped cream from a can that you can face at 0800. All washed down with the, now expected, endless cup of coffee and we are good to go. Damned lucky we are riding not driving this trip or we'ed come home enormous ;) The weather gods smile on us, sunshine and a blessed tailwind accompany us for most of the day. We climb up to Libby Dam, a stupendous concrete construction, and onwards over rolling hills, crossing multiple rivers, wondering how a river comes to be named Cripple Horse??? After 100km we decide to give the campground a miss and push on to Eureka(!). A brilliant idea as we meet a group of cyclists on a short tour, with support crew, who are somewhere between impressed and incredulous that we plan a cross country trip on steel (heavy) bikes without cleats! And we are safely ensconced in our room when the short lived, but violent storm hits. And can therefore enjoy watching the clouds, rain, sunlight and wind whip across the surrounding mountain tops. A long and successful day on the bike, feeling tired, sore and self satisfied. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

  1. Well done, guys...love those big storms that pass through. Again, something I miss: big claps of thunder, rain pouring down while you are sheltered nicely. And I've just noticed that you have a rest day coming up in Glacier National Park. Stunning. I hope you get good weather there. Glacier was the first place I ever experienced mountains, and it brought tears to my eyes.

Big hugs, Jackie, Liz and Scout
