The bike is good project began life in 2011 as a transcontinental bicycle adventure. As we pedalled from Seattle to Boston it grew into something even bigger. Life from the bike became life as we knew it, a way of engaging with the world that was much richer and honest than we had previously known. On our return to Australia we have tried to continue in the b.i.g. spirit, still happiest pedalling!

Day 93 Emmett to Wallaceburg, Canada 84km

With the sun shining we rode in high spirits the easy 50km to the border, through picturesque countryside, dotted with cute little cottages, golf courses and the obligatory traditional American barn. Along these back country, poorly maintained roads, we bumped and shook ourselves over the 4000 mile mark. (6437km)

Eventually we bounced to the shores of the St Claire River, which forms the border between the US and Canada. Where much to our delight we enjoyed an unexpected boat ride across to Sombra. For the bargain price of one dollar each we got to ride on a barge across a surprisingly tumultuous river and watch with both fear and admiration as a very large tanker, driven with great skill, joined us on the barge.

Canada proved within just the first few hours to be all that you expect, beautiful, relaxed, friendly, and much more like home than the US. From the border patrol man, to the fellow cyclist enroute everyone seemed full of encouragement, helpfulness and advice, AND I got another stamp in my passport! We even caught up with a group of five other traveling cyclists, whom we have been trailing for the past week. Heading for Bar Harbour, Maine, they seemed to have a similar traveling philosophy, were taking it slow and taking it in. A hotel room and a laundry, mean that we begin our journey in Ontario tomorrow well rested, dry and smelling better than we have in a week! - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
