The bike is good project began life in 2011 as a transcontinental bicycle adventure. As we pedalled from Seattle to Boston it grew into something even bigger. Life from the bike became life as we knew it, a way of engaging with the world that was much richer and honest than we had previously known. On our return to Australia we have tried to continue in the b.i.g. spirit, still happiest pedalling!

Day 80 Mercer to Eagle River 96km

OK, so we have never been tattslotto kind of people, but I think I may start buying the occasional ticket with the pledge that should I win, I will invest in a cottage in northern Wisconsin from which I invite you all to come bicycle in the warmer months, fish and canoe in the autumn, and ski in the winter. It's pretty easy to dream big when sitting on a bicycle for a good four or five hours, pedaling the backroads, and watching this green wonderland pass slowly by. The towns we passed through today broke through this reverie with their individual claims to fame. Goulburn NSW may have the big Marino, but Mercer WI has the big Loon!

And Boulder Junction has more going for it than just great ice cream

Fishing is HUGE here, but it is like a foreign language to me. The fisherpeople seem a cheerful bunch though, always ready with a wave and a hello. This could be partly to do with the common combination of fishing and beer. I especially like the big signs at lots of the pubs saying fishermen welcome! Did they used to be unwelcome? And if so why? And where does all this leave the fisherwomen? But since Kerstin has proved to me that golf (of any kind) will not be my post retirement sport, maybe I should give fishing a go, especially if I ever win tattslotto! Not to be left out, we stay tonight in the 'Snow Mobile Capital of the World', Eagle River, where the Snow Mobile hall of fame, the Snow Mobile museum and the Snow Mobile International Derby are all situated. I could always claim snow mobiling as my mid life crisis sport ;) - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
