The bike is good project began life in 2011 as a transcontinental bicycle adventure. As we pedalled from Seattle to Boston it grew into something even bigger. Life from the bike became life as we knew it, a way of engaging with the world that was much richer and honest than we had previously known. On our return to Australia we have tried to continue in the b.i.g. spirit, still happiest pedalling!

Day 75 Minneapolis to Saint Croix Falls WI 89kms

It is difficult to make the mental transition to being back 'on the road', when we have SO enjoyed Minneapolis, especially being a part of a family home. The morning with Robin and Greg is savoured, and we are spoilt with a homemade carbo loading breakfast and, of course, that previously mentioned excellent coffee! Even though Robin catches me admiring the squirrels she despises (and really she has good reason), the friendship we have started it tough enough to take it. Farewells and good wishes are exchanged, we hope to offer some of the same hospitality to this lovely family when they are next on tour.

Our exit from Minneapolis is just as perfect as our entry, Greg rides with us out to the trail head, where we squeeze a few more hugs in, he points us in the direction of Boston and we head for Wisconsin on the Gateway trail. MORE fantastic cycling infrastructure, 15 miles of green, shady, quiet, safe bicycle path to take you from the city to the surrounding countryside. The other cyclists on the trail want to know where we are heading, big smiles and hellos are passed amongst all the trail users, from dog walkers, inline skaters to racing bicyclists, we couldn't be further from a Sydney atmosphere! The end of the trail exposes us to the heat of the day, a sun shining from a cloudless sky bounces oppressive heat up off the blacktop, but the riding is pretty, filled with only short ups and downs, before we know it we must also say farewell to the state of Minnesota. And hello to Wisconsin!

Where Kerstin can indulge in her daily ice-cream ritual, word is that we are now in the dairy capital of the US (it says so on the number plates), and within 5 miles of crossing the border we pass our first cheese factory. So far American cheese has at best been bland and inoffensive and at worst so orange and rubbery as to be frightening! We are hopeful that Wisconsin will prove that good American cheese is possible, we will keep you informed of the cheese situation. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

  1. Hey guys - so glad you had such a great time in Minneapolis - although it has been making Jackie very homesick! Gotta love those Minnesotans. Good luck on the cheese search in Wisconsin. If you're lucky you might even find another glass of cheap NZ sav blanc to go with it!!...Love, Liz x
