Today marks the first day on this trip in which the riding itself wasn't entertainment enough, and we resorted to playing some music to keep ourselves awake! Having crossed the Missouri river yesterday, we are now what the locals descriptively call "east river", the whole State of South Dakota is essentially split into east and west by the Missouri. And if we thought that the plains of the last few days were relatively featureless, that was only because we hadn't actually been east river, where there isn't even the novelty of hills or bends in the road to add variety to your cycling day. Today's cycling was made up of these events, pedal, watch out truck passing, hold handlebars straight, watch out roadkill, look(!) endless field of corn, wave to passing Harley riders, watch out pot hole, look(!) endless field of sunflowers, pedal and repeat, for five and a half hours! The biggest challenge of today was finding a private spot to pee. In a landscape with no trees, where acres and acres of wheat/corn/sunflowers/soybeans stretch in all directions this can be tricky... but surely the farmers won't mind a bit of extra fertilser on their crop?! And it makes for a pretty view from in-between the sunflowers.
