Happy Swiss National Day! In honor of the event Kerstin flew the flag from the back of her bicycle, and I was surprised that no one stopped us with a first aid request. Besides being a day of Swiss patriotism, it was also a day of extremes, I think I used every gear on my bike today, we ground up steep, long hills at our slowest pace ever. And we sailed along in top gear, exiting Wyoming at a pace to make your heart sing. The weather also tried to give us a bit of variety, a humid, windless morning and a breezy, broiling afternoon was cut short by a thunderstorm, more humidity and now a steady drizzle. I discovered that my mood improves exponentially with the application of coffee after days without it, but this phenomenon could also be attributed to the excellent energy of the town of Sundance, where we were greeted by so many interested and interesting people, to make you feel right at home. A real life cowboy, great hat and boots, was a highlight of chivalry and friendliness. The perfect final goodbye to the people of Wyoming. South Dakota lays before us, and we continue to map out our route, based on tips, chance meetings with other cyclists and more maps than we can reasonably fold. Tomorrow we head for the Black Hills and we hope to avoid some of the 5 million motorcyclists heading for the Sturgis Rally by taking the Mickelson trail.

Oh, ugh...dehydration, you guys. That can be scary stuff, let alone being miserable! Yikes...glad you're both ok. Whadayareckon about those cracking thunderstorms though, eh? Man, I miss those! I'll be interested to hear how you go across South Dakota. You would know it's reputation for boring, I'm sure, but at least you've got one national park to keep you entertained for part of it. I've heard the Black Hills are beautiful. We're chugging along here - hoping to go visit Mick and Simon in late Sept - early Oct. Safe travels! Us
