The bike is good project began life in 2011 as a transcontinental bicycle adventure. As we pedalled from Seattle to Boston it grew into something even bigger. Life from the bike became life as we knew it, a way of engaging with the world that was much richer and honest than we had previously known. On our return to Australia we have tried to continue in the b.i.g. spirit, still happiest pedalling!

Day 8 Riverside to Wanconda 65km

Another early start, for another day of climbing, very slow and long climb, under threatening skies with only moments of sunshine spotted. Tough day for Kerstin, but luckily a much better one for Louise, who took the lead rider job, set the pace (slow), and pointed out the birds, trees, hills, locals, views etc... that were worth slowing down even more for ;) After what felt like an age we pulled into the "town" of Wanconda, population 348, turns out this is for the area, there is no town, just a cafe/store/servo and a bit up the road, between the Church and the old School and campground. Where we wearily set up our tent under the waving stars and stripes, and cocooned ourselves against the cold at this altitude. Louise, in her 'leader' role decides it's too cold to cook our own dinner and we should brave the cafe. And thank god we did! The locals yet again prove to be welcoming and warm, we feel rejuvenated by their spirits and the burgers, coffee and hot chocolate help too! We go to bed with the local knowledge of a way around the two passes on the map, and now face only one, and also that the little creatures watching us from their grassy homes on the campground are ground squirrels, or "targets" depending on who you ask!

  1. Good on ya, Louise...toodling helps one to take it all in. Let's hear it for the Toodling leader!

And what do you reckon, do the burgers taste different?
