The bike is good project began life in 2011 as a transcontinental bicycle adventure. As we pedalled from Seattle to Boston it grew into something even bigger. Life from the bike became life as we knew it, a way of engaging with the world that was much richer and honest than we had previously known. On our return to Australia we have tried to continue in the b.i.g. spirit, still happiest pedalling!

Day 12 Colville to Pioneer Park, just outside Newport 96km

Unbelievable! For the first time this trip we awake to sunshine and blue skies, for which we are both grateful and excited. Eager to be on our way, we head out early following the route recommended to us by fellow cyclists, through Chewelah and onto Usk, where we plan to camp. This route takes us over another pass, but cuts 20 miles off the bike map route. We happily endure the 21 miles of headwind if it means we can have this sunshine to lift our spirits. The pass climbs sharp and short over just 9 miles, and for the first time this on trip it doesn't rain on the descent! But we are so sure it will we put on all our rain gear regardless! Only to have to remove it all again once back down the mountain. A beautiful ride along the Pend Oreille river valley, which is flooding, plenty of birdlife taking advantage, and multiple turtles who put their lives in jeopardy crossing roads, luckily the Louise and Kerstin turtle rescue team was there to help! Due to flooding our intended campground was closed, so we pushed on thankful for warm weather and beautiful scenery to distract us from aching behinds! An unintended 12 miles added but overall the most successful day on the bikes so far, which has delivered us to the doorstep of Idaho. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

  2. Hey, guys - Sounds like a great day! So glad you saved the turtles. I can just see you guys doing that. So sweet!

Glad you're getting some sun. Woo hoo! Yes, June tends to be a very rainy month...and how about mosquitos? Are you dealing with them at all?

Hey, my friend Robin in Minneapolis is happy to have you guys stay with her and her family. She has a lovely family. She is an old roommate of mine. They live in a big old house near the University of Minnesota.

Can I send you an email with more details? Just to your yahoo account, Kerstin? You can send us an email if you get a chance, and then I can hit reply and make sure it gets to you.

    Cheers, guys!

    Love, Jackie and Liz

  3. Great, one State done in 12 days. Send some sunshine Downunder. Will be thinking of you during the Sensi Salami Weekend. Tried to add a photo but it didn't work! You are adapting to changes in the itinerary, that's good.
