The gods of cycling smiled upon us today! I always like heading east, it feels like we are making progress towards Boston. And today hwy 212 stretched eastwards in a long straight line, with a stiff prairie wind at our backs, no hills worth mentioning, those 100 kilometres of easterly travel were a joy. We cruised through the small, and adorable towns of Frankfort, Doland and Henry. We sailed past the turn offs for Naples, Vienna, Florence and Garden City, despite their alluring names. The charming town of Clark convinced us to brake against the wind, with their 1950s era Main street, not a trendy remake, the original kept in pristine condition, and the friendliness and curiosity of the locals at Food Fair, could also have been straight from that era of good manners and small town hospitality. The road was not ours alone, the size of these farms lends itself to equally enormous pieces of farm machinery, I won't pretend to know what they actually do, but we were passed by multiple vehicles painted in bright primary colours, covered in bizarre and unfathomable moving parts, driven slowly by the farming fraternity of South Dakota. I especially liked it when they drove them into town and parked on Main street, even farmers need to shop! We are also meeting some new local animals, pheasants, frogs, turtles, ducks, cormorants, pelicans, and for a bit of extra excitement today a snake! Who wiggled right across the road in front of Kerstin, which to my amusement caused her to squeal and lift her feet off the pedals and into the air :) Our last night in South Dakota finds us on the shores of Pelican Lake, and with those improbably large and solid looking birds whirling above us, like A380s over Sydney, we say farewell.
